A Few New Things

Tuesday, May 31, 2005 | 0 Comments

Well, I changed the font on my blog and I am still trying to decide if I like it. Your opinion may sway my decision, so if you have a preference feel free to leave me a comment.

Also, I started a new blog to talk more in depth about my gardening experiences. I will still post some pictures of my gardens here, but the other blog will have a lot more. Plus I will post about things that I have learned over the years, so there may be some tips that would be useful to you in your garden- no matter how large or small that might be.

Now, SSB, ESC, we have to come to some kind of middle ground here, something we can all agree on? Here, I'll start: Courier is lame, but Comic Sans MS is very nice. Anyone else?

I'll leave the font discussion to your learned folk, sadly I have no opinion.

Night Out for Sy

Monday, May 30, 2005 | 0 Comments

Well, I had a pretty good night last night. My best friend, Astoria (her screen name not real name), here in town (SSB is my friend to trump all friends, though) was having a very stressful day and wanted me to go have a few drinks with her. Normally I stay away from the whole bar scene here because I am allergic to cigarette smoke, the whole soap opera of small town bars can get really annoying, and I have better things to spend my money on. But, she sounded desperate to get out and I hadn't been up there with her in a long time so I said sure.

We went to the bar where her baby's daddy works. He really needs to shit or get off the pot. They have been together five years. They live together and have a child together, but he just won't commit to her. He's not going out and seeing other women or anything, he just keeps telling her that he's not sure that he would be happy with her for the rest of his life. He is generally a pretty sweet guy, but when it comes to their relationship he's a total asstard. (that's for you Jake ;)

There was a jazz band playing at the bar and my "neighbor" (That's what he calls himself although he doesn't actually live near me. He used to and his ex-wife is my next-door neighbor, though.) was playing trumpet. I have never heard him play before. He's very good. He came over to talk to me a little bit between sets. He was telling me how the ceiling fan above where they were playing made it really hard to play because it was like talking into a fan- Waaouwaaouwaaouwaaou.

It was nice to just go out and hang with her. Normally when we go out there are so many other people and stories being played out, that I don't really get to enjoy her company. But last night, it was pretty quiet so we just got to sit and talk to each other without the drama. It was like having coffee, but with beers.

We left that bar when things got a little too smokey and went to a new bar. The bar we ended up in didn't have too many people in there and they were all guys. Some guy buys us a beer. And another guy seeing his opportunity lost offers to buy us Cheetos instead. Well, I can tell you that I had never been asked by a guy in a bar if he could buy me a bag of chips before. As we are eating the Cheetos and talking to the bartender there came shouting at the far end of the bar followed by a scuffle. The bartender went down there to settle things out and as he reached the end of the bar a stool came flying across the bar right behind Astoria into the liquor shelves smashing at least 5 bottles of liquor and knocking several others onto the floor. As three guys were pulling one of the brawlers out the front door, five other guys were holding back the other guy trying to push him to the back door. Another stool came flying toward the front of the bar, hitting and knocking over a table behind us. Astoria and I just sat there eating the Cheetos and drinking our beer. With one last shove they managed to get the guy out the back door. Seeing that, the guy at the front door (who was the guy who bought us the Cheetos incidentally) asked if he could come back in now. Astoria and I said, "NO! Now go home!" His head dropped, he turned around and shuffled off. We got to finished our beers in peace because we were the only ones that didn't get kicked out of the bar.

I had tons of fun and excitement, always got a great place to sit at the bar, and it wasn't even that smokey. I think I will have to go out on a Sunday night more often.

Which was it...crunchy or puffy? Crunchy are just friendly Cheetos, but puffy ones mean he was lookin' for some action.
NEVER take the puffy unless you mean it.

Crunchy. And he most likely was looking for action- but that doesn't mean he's finding any. I think the fight was an outlet for all his pent up frustration.

Blogger Sylvana said...

No. Those are more for hard core Wisconsin bars- kind of like the one where Homer hangs out. The ones that have a group of men past thirty hanging out, maybe getting together to go ice fishing or hunting. There are always the same guys in there. They are there so much they even have their own key kind of places. Ah! Memories of my childhood!

Arabian Mystery Tulips

Monday, May 30, 2005 | 0 Comments

I have had a little trouble with these tulips in the past. I planted five originally five years ago and there are only four now. I also planted White Dream tulips with them, but they never bloomed and are now no where to be found.

This is actually the first year that they bloomed well. I was so happy to see these finally bloom, because they are so beautiful. I will definitly be getting more of these!

Orange and Yellow Tulips

Monday, May 30, 2005 | 0 Comments

Unfortunately I have misplaced the names of these particular tulips. If I find them I will add them later. The yellow bunch in the back had a red one in it-oops! I guess when it comes to packaging bulbs, you can't always be perfect. They really almost all look the same as bulbs.

I really like the ones in the foreground. They are part of my orange bulb garden that I got in one package. Ah! I love convenience. There were also daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths. I however have terrible luck with hyacinths and they have long since disappeared. If anyone has advice on hyacinths I would greatly appreciate it.

Those are really gorgeous! My advice on hyacinths is don't waste your money. They don't last more than two or at most three years. Except, of course, that crazy hyacinth growing by my shed. There is an exception to every rule!

In our town we have a compost site where citizens can go dump their yard waste and pick up loads of finished compost for their gardens. I love this service in our town because we don't have to pay to get rid of our yard waste and it has kept my gardening costs down immensely.

I was there last week getting a truck-full of compost to add to my garden beds. As I was shoveling, this guy in business casual, complete with tie, stepped out of his car (some sporty sedan) with a head set on and his cell phone strapped to his belt. He began pacing the compost site talking business to somebody on the other end, really loudly I might add. He didn't even seem to notice or care that he was walking through the muddy leftovers of rotting vegetation.

Community compost is a great idea. Maybe the guy didn't realize he'd stopped at a compost site. Perhaps he was so caught up in his own biznez world that he'd thought he'd actually driven to the office and was heading for the coffee machine...?

I was explaining to SSB my theory of how you might be better off NOT winning American Idol- you can retain more of your street cred. The winner is turned into a Miss America-style show pony and it is very hard to take them serious. I at first was disappointed to see Constantine lose the vote- but knowing that he still had a chance to go on and make meaningful music instead of being yoked to some evil corporate machine made me feel so much better.
THEN I saw the finale episode where all the losers form the Final 12 had to go on stage and sing some really gay renditions of The Beach Boys songs. I like The Beach Boys and gays, but that was just awful! It looked like an Old Navy commercial. How embarassing for them all. And there goes a huge chunk of Constantine's street cred. Oh well, I hope he's getting paid well at least.

I really want Bo Bice to win. Carrie Underwear can sing, but she is not as good as Bo. She's not even as good as Vonzelle who didn't make it to the final two.

10 more minutes...

5 more minutes...

OH NO!! Poor Bo. At least you can keep your street cred. Ha! Maybe he and Constantine can get together and scrape enough together between the two of them to go on and get an honorable career.

Poll Results

Wednesday, May 25, 2005 | 0 Comments

It's a landslide victory!!! 54% of you blog addicts would stop to grab your computer as you flee your conflagrant abode. You have it right next to the bed, don't you? Or do you sleep with it? Come on, you can admit. Sometimes I do. It's all warm from hours of late night blogging. Ah, sweet, sweet computer! You always make me forget all the times you bitch slap me with a freeze-up just as I try to save my last hour of work in Word. Or the fickleness of whether you will start up right away or make me wait 20 minutes. I forgive you!

16% said they would save their pets. 16% sleep in the nude. OH YEAH!
11% said they have kids and would save them over all else. While there are 3% of you out there admit you have kids, but figure if they aren't smart enough to save themselves, well, they probably shouldn't live to reproduce.

Don't forget to answer the new poll!
