This Is Why I Post at 3AM

Saturday, April 30, 2005 | 0 Comments

I have pretty much always worked better at night. It is quieter. I can actually get through a whole thought without being interrupted/distracted and then forgetting what the hell I was doing. I have trouble functioning when I have to get up too early. I used to work at a factory where I had to be there by 5am. Getting ready for work in the morning I would sit down to tie my shoes and just fall asleep. Try and explain that one to the boss. SO I always figured that I was a night owl. This test was pretty much right on for me, except there is no way in hell I could work until 7am! 3am tops! And during the summer my rhythm changes; I have trouble staying up late and I wake up naturally by 7 or 8am. They didn't really talk about people who were multi-rhythmed, so I wonder if there are more people out there like me.

You are an Extreme Owl. Based on your responses to the Lark and Owl Test, you are an extreme owl. True owls love to sleep into the late morning but have no trouble staying awake and alert past 2 or 3 a.m. Their periods of high alertness and sleepiness are about two hours later than people with standard circadian profiles. Owls have an easier time staying alert on the night shift. This is due, in part, because their times of alertness start out more closely aligned with being awake at night. In other words, if you're comfortable going to bed at 3 a.m., working until 7 a.m. isn't that large of a stretch. In addition, owls' circadian rhythms tend to be more flexible than people with standard or morning profiles. After successive night shifts, their circadian rhythms become increasingly well adjusted to shiftwork.

I haven't taken the test, but I know the results are going to be pretty much the same as yours. I have trouble falling asleep before 2 AM just because that's when my mind is the most active. Since I have a job where I have to get up at 7 AM, this doesn't usually lead to a restful week.

Thank christ for Sundays, eh?

Have a great rest of the weekend.

Bye!

Exactly what I figured as well... I am an Extreme Owl. I work until after midnight, sometimes until 2am and I am wide awake when I get home. I am up for at least an hour after I get home. Doesn't matter how late I get to bed, I still need 8-9 hours of sleep.

I Dream of Efficiency

Saturday, April 30, 2005 | 0 Comments

I just re-did my comment code so that when you click on "comments" that's right where it goes. I do like efficiency! I have tried it out, and all seems to be going well...However, weird things always happen to me, so if anyone is having problems with it could you email me at sylvanablog@yahoo.com with the specifics of the problem so that I can get it right? Excellent. I knew I could count on you.

I mean, why would you purposely design a template that way? Lucky for me I'm a smart girl who can figure out how to fix crap like that. Now if I could only figure out what I did with my damn keys!

Wow, you just doubled your productivity! And your keys are locked in the car.

I have been feeling crabby all week, and today hadn't really been looking any better. I mean, I was pretty psyched about the ivory-billed woodpecker (how cool is that? Now they just have to confirm the thylacine) but then I was late to class, my hair was all frizzy, I lost my keys, and then I locked them in my car. What a shitty day! But then, the big, beautiful, brown truck came and gave me the modem that would make everything right. My ticket to HIGH SPEED INTERNET ACCESS! Yeah, you heard me! And, the best part is that it's WIRELESS!!! Oh yeah! that's good stuff. Although taking six hours to install was no picnic. It really only should have taken 1-2 at the most. But nothing ever seems to go that smoothly for me. I was surprised I got it set up in one day. It usually takes me several days for something like this. At first the cable company didn't have me on record for having purchased broadband. Why did I get the equipment from them if I had never called to sign up for broadband? Is that an unanswerable philosophical question? No, the answer is: Comcast sucks. Then they said that I had to talk to the Internet Comcast people since that was where I had ordered it. OK, whatever. I call them, and they say that I have to order it all over again. Right. So I do. Now here's to hoping that they don't send me two bills. I try to set up the modem first. Uh, no go. Tech has to walk me through that. A little bit of this, and a little bit of that...wait. Is it working? YES! Behold! The power of the internet as it was meant to be. WooHoo! High Speed rocks! But then I have to tempt fate by hooking up the wireless router. The disc that was supposed to walk me through that was crap, so I once again had to rely on a tech. She's asking me which cable is hooked up where, and there are so many cables behind my computer at this point it looks like a pile of spaghetti. I keep plugging and pulling until- yeah! I have it! Now I can revel in the beauty of technology. Yes, yes. My Precious.

Dear Comcast customer,
It has been brought to our attention that you encountered some set up problems with you Comcast High Speed Internet Account. It is Comcast's position to be mindlful of these issues, and we would like to inform you that your concerns are groundless , and your complaints, moronic.
We know you has a choice when selecting an ISP...looks like you chose poorly.

Back from the Dead

This is a Carl Brenders painting of an Ivory-billed woodpecker.
Woohoo! I am very excite about this new discovery. The Ivory-billed woodpecker has been discovered alive and surviving in breeding pairs. Believed to have been completely extinct for over sixty years, there have been sightings of this species since 1999. The official confirmation was made via a video taped April 2004 of one of the birds. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Nature Conservancy and other groups have joined to form the Big Woods Conservation Partnership to conserve 200,000 acres of forest habitat and rivers in the area during the next 10 years. This will definitely be going on the top of my charity list.

I Must Have Good Taste

Friday, April 29, 2005 | 0 Comments

I was just watching the Daily Show, and Jon Stewart had an economist on there named Stephen Levitt talking about his book Freakonomics. Huh. Where have I heard that name before? Then it hit me- I have this guy's blog in my sidebar on Sylvana Finds. I checked it, and sure enough, it really is this guy's blog. WOW! It's almost like a brush with fame! If Jon Stewart thinks this guy is good enough to have on his show, then he must good. Go check out this blog to find out more about it. It is about economics, but he does a really good job of making it interesting and fun.

This occasion seems appropriate for me to unleash one of my favourite Lewis Black quotes:

"I don't know anything about the economy. I took economics in college, but it was taught at eight o'clock in the morning. About halfway through the semester, I shook the professor and said: 'Why are you teaching this at eight in the morning; do you want to keep this crap a secret!?!'"

It's funny because it's true. I barely remember anything from my eight o'clock classes.

In actual on-topic commentary, yes, that is an interesting website, even for a man who barely understands the concept of money.

I got this quiz from Karla's blog. Remember the Brat Pack from the Eighties? No? Boy do I feel OLD! Well take the damn quiz anyway! And sure, the possible answers might not exactly match your true answer, but pick the closest one. Uh- I ended up being a guy that is a chick magnet. What does that say about me? Along with the many guys that have hit on me, I have been hit on by the occasional girl, so maybe they have something there. I guess I have that universal appeal. And if you really look at Bender- I think he does too.

I got this from BCU. I have always wondered what my actual cash value was, and now I know. I am worth $1,887,144.00 on HumanForSale.com. I think I need to increase my life insurance! That sounds like a lot, but it's all relative. So what are you worth?

"Have you been thinking about putting yourself up for sale lately? Ever wonder how much money you could get on the open human market? HumanForSale.com will attempt to place a value on your life using a variety of criteria in 4 basic facets of life (physical, mental, lifestyle, personality). This is obviously a very subjective matter and is not intended and does not claim to be scientifically accurate. The more honestly you answer the questions, the more realistic the dollar value returned will be."
