Mattress Update

We have had the Tempurpedic for about a month and a half now. The weather has been really hot, and it has been pretty cold... well, pretty cool anyway. My rating so far? It is fairly comfortable, but for as expensive as it is, I'd say that I haven't found it to be worth it so far.

I love that it keeps a nice shape, that you can run into the side of it and not come away with a bruise, that you can sit on the edge without sliding off or getting a rod across your ass, that you can roll on your side and not get your shoulder shoved into your ear, that SSB can comfortably put both arms around me in bed (no more extraneous arm!), and that it keeps a comfortable temperature in the heat and cold.

SSB has been loving it. Problem is that I have been waking up with a stiff upper back. With a bed that expensive, you should be waking up rested, not stiff. I think it may have something to do with my body temperature. I have a low body temp- 97.2 degrees. This runs in my family; my son has this too. I don't think that it should make that big of a difference with the foam, but maybe it does. Maybe I have enough body heat to make the foam react.

I really don't want to return to bed shopping. It was horrible! But if we do bring this one back, I am getting a Kingsdown. That was like a cloud. I am giving this bed a little more time. Right after we purchased this mattress, Tempurpedic changed to a 120 night trial. I'm thinking that if I contact them about the problems that I am having and let them know that I'd like to try it out longer, but will bring it back if I can't, maybe they will extend our trial to the new 120 days. Hey, it is worth a shot! I have gotten lots of things from company's just by contacting them. That's a good test to see if they are a good company: do they react generously to the crackpots that contact them bitching about their product?

Maybe you need a new pillow? Or, has it been stressful in your life lately, causing the muscles in your neck and shoulders to stiffen up throughout the day, only to relax when you go to bed; then you'd certainly wake up stiff and sore because they are healing.

Thoughts: Check the pillow; if it's more than a few years old, it's time for a new one. Have SSB give you a neck/shoulder massage at bedtime. Take a coupla Advil at bedtime.

If you get a new pillow, my husband swears by the 'memory foam' kind, you know, that's shaped for your neck and head, comes in small/medium/large. You can sometimes try them out at the stores that sell them. They for sure sell them at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Hope this helps...

Thanks, Indiaiynke. I do have a memory foam pillow- a Tempurpedic. I actually have been taking Advil for my tendonitis, but I will try taking it every night before I go to bed too.

Um, can you explain to me again why you WANT to wake up stiff for an even longer time? I'm having difficulties trying to understand why you want to extend the trial period on a mattress that is causing you obvious discomfort. It's definitely time to move on. Yes, I know that mattress shopping is a pain, but is it more painful than waking up in pain EVERY MORNING?

OldRoses, they say that this bed has a breaking in period and I just want to make sure that it is the bed and not something else. Although, I do think that a good bed should still allow a good nights sleep even if you did something stupid to yourself during the day. It would also buy me more time to mattress shop, since once they take this mattress, I would be mattressless.

Since you're already taking something for your tendonitis, it's probably not a good idea to take more for sore muscles probably caused by the mattress. I could *never* do one of those pillows, but husband swears by it. In reading your response, I used to believe that you had to "break" new shoes in, but figured out a long time ago that new shoes should immediately fit you. Probably the same with the mattress!!! One word comes to mind: Serta.

Matress shopping isn't so bad...it was serta fun going to the store in our pjs. Next time, though, we need to bring a sign saying something like "F off, salestools!" or something like that so we can take a nap in peace. Maybe we can order a pizza or something while we're there.

Funny funny man - Sylvana has good taste. We've got a row of ex-Serta counting sheep on our headboard, you know they've all been put out of a job since everybody with a Serta gets a good night's rest and doesn't need to count sheep anymore. I tell you, it's hard to explain those sheep to visitors - we just started saying they were sex toys and nobody asks again. :)

We;re looking for a new mattress too, but Hubs thought the Tempur one felt creepy so we're not going that route.

We're thinking a Sealy Posturpedic; what did you think of that one?

Matresses here are in the dark ages, it's torture and they don't last. For the money they charge, I would expect to have a matress last more then five years (and that is with monthly turning and all that happy crap). How the Japanese sleep on those futons, I'll never know.

Perhaps we're all a bunch of pusspies who need to toughen up and sleep on the floor?

Indiaiynke, believe me, I don't buy that whole breaking in your shoe thing either. If they aren't comfortable off the bat, I won't buy them. And when I get them home I wear them around the house for a day before I take the tags off just in case. But, with the Tempurpedic foam, it needs to be moved around and kneaded a little to loosen up the foam cells to allow for the air movement that causes the foam to act like it is supposed to. I had the pillow first, and it took almost a month just to soften it up. Now it is a great pillow- but it wasn't that comfortable that first month. I have tried out practically every bed on the market. I'm really at a loss. The best bed I ever had was a $30 air mattress that we tucked into our soft-side water bed in place of the water bladder. It eventually sprung a leak and every one I replaced it with after that did the same. Oh, well!
And SSB is the funniest person I know.

SSB, a sign might help, but I'm pretty sure that none of them can read. Maybe as soon as they start approaching us I'll say, "EH! EH! Get away!" Hey, works for the dogs! I could bring a rolled up newspaper and some treats to throw them if they mind.

Lyvvie, I tried out so many mattresses and hated most of them that it was just easier to remember the ones that I liked. I REALLY like Kingsdown, but I am afraid that it will get lumpy. I liked Spring Air. And I thought Serta was OK, especially for the price. I can't remember Sealy, so either I didn't try it out (which is unlikely) or there was something that I didn't like about it. But at this point, I don't know anymore.

Pink Lady, I agree. But we did try something that seems to be working. We switched sides. SSB seems to have been able to soften up his side faster than I have been able to soften my side. I feel much better now!

Chick Pea, welcome to my main blog! You're welcome, and thank you for having an interesting enough blog to get catch my interest. There are tons of horrible blogs out there. It really is a treat to find some good ones! I have been so busy lately. Once I get a few things settled in my life, I will return to more regular reviews on Sylvana Finds.
