*SIGH*

I was supposed to be at my interview at 11:45am this morning. I even called to make sure that my appointment was in fact at 11:45am so that I would not show up at the wrong time. When SSB came home for lunch, he asked when my appointment was. I told him 11:45am.

So why did I think that I had until 12:00pm to get there?

What is wrong with me?

In my defense, I was fighting off a migraine. Those things do disturb my sensibility. I'm hoping that whatever it was, this was the end of it! I have to do some sort of anti-curse procedure. Anyone got any suggestions?

The woman interviewing me said that it was OK that I was late, but really, what do you think? I think she was just being polite. Other than this, I know that I did very well in the interview. I didn't babble. I answered all the tough stuff with ease. I think that she was seriously considering me. Now if she can just forget that I came in late.

Question: when they ask if you have any questions, is it OK to ask what the job pays and if there are benefits? I think that it should be. It IS a very important part of your decision to take one job over another, after all. But everytime I bring it up, it seems to make the interviewer rather nervous. Then I start to wonder what they are trying to hide. It really shouldn't be that difficult. Do they not remember what they paid the last person? Did they not sit down and go over their budget to see how much they had to pay out for the position? It just feels like I'm talking to a car salesman. JUST TELL ME THE FRICKIN AMOUNT!!!

The woman that emailed me about my resume has yet to get back to me. I bet she is mulling over that stupid mistake. You know, when employers are trying to narrow down their choices, it is not a good idea to help them along with stupid mistakes.

OH WELL! There will be other interviews. I like to think that even when things look like they are going badly, they are actually going well. For instance, maybe I am killing my chances on getting these jobs because there is a MUCH BETTER job coming up! So, I'm trying not to stress too much over these. But it is getting down to the wire. I hope that perfect job comes SOOON!!!

(Now, where's that ice cream?)

Other news...

I would like to introduce you to a couple of blogs.

My best friend in town just started her blog. I got her hooked just like I did to SSB! Heheheh! Her blogger id is Astoria. You may have noticed her comments on my blog recently. I'd like you all to give her a big HELLO!

The other blog is one that I am co-blogging with Canuk called Northern Latitudes. It will contain over-run from our blogs, mostly centering on less serious political ideas, satire, funny/weird news- generally things that wouldn't fit in our current formats. I already contributed a post about the gay marriage bill in California. It is my first time writing political satire, so be gentle!

Job interviews are all a load of bollocks. I hate the "Have you got any questions for us?" bit because, by that time, you just want to get out of there. Of course, one good question is: "How well does this job description reflect what the job is actually like, and what is the staff turnover like?" You could always try "Are you really OK, or are you just pretending to be nice because you have to?" There are loads of questions, but it's best just to keep quiet because they always seem to go on the defensive when I ask them. Can't think why.

I can't wait to be done with all of this!

I'll bet when she read over the email she didn't even notice. Most people already understand the intended meaning of a sentence before they've read the entire thing because the brain uses the first few sounds to trigger an inference and process the rest of the word on its own. In other words, we "predict" what we are going to read word by word, so there's a good chance she didn't see it missing at all!

Good luck. Don't worry about the missing word. Somehow it already has been "decided": small mistakes in business e-mails don't count because it's not "real" correspondence. The main exception to this rule is if you leave out something like a totally negating word (eg, "not").

As for money, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS ask for more. A useful guideline: Cameron Diaz is making $20 million per movie. Adjust accordingly.

Salary is never a good thing to discuss during the first interview but asking about benefits is good. I know it's hard, but try to be patient. Sometimes companies take a while to make hiring decisions so you may not hear from interviewers for a week or two. I feel your pain. I went through it twice in three years. I was laid off, spent six months looking for a job, got one, absolutely hated it (they lied to me about the job during the interview) and then spent close to two years looking for another job while working at the nightmare one. It was worth it though. I love my current job, the people I work with and the company I work for. Hang in there.

October 10, 2005 12:52 AM

Blogger Sylvana said...

Maria, thanks! I'm going to leave the picture up for awhile.
The interviewers did such a good job of covering the job descriptions, that it was hard to think of something to ask.

OldRoses, I don't understand why salary has to be so taboo. It is a very important factor in making a decision. If they are secretive about the salary, then I begin to wonder how good an employer they would actually be.

October 10, 2005 12:51 PM

Blogger The Doc said...

See, I would disagree with OldRoses and say you should ask about benefits and a general salary range. Both for your own best interest and for future decision-making. I mean, if you ever get into a situation where you're offered more than one job, you should know what to expect at each of the jobs. Not that money should be the number one factor, but if you're offered two nearly identical jobs, then salary and benefits should definitely enter into it.

(Also: the picture! Man, it's all little and bitmappy, but from the looks of things, SSB is a lucky man. Brains and looks...)

Yeah, Doc, that's my thought exactly! Not that I'm too worried about multiple job offers...

Self-Sabotage

Wednesday, October 05, 2005 | 0 Comments

I just retrieved an email response to my resume from another potential employer. They said that they were impressed with my resume and wanted to set up an interview as soon as possible. They had sent the email on Tuesday! How did I miss that?

Needless to say I speedily sent a reply. Ten minutes later, I got a reply back saying that she would contact me soon about setting up an interview. Then I noticed that the email I sent her was missing a whole word in one sentence!

A WHOLE WORD!!!

How can I convince an employer that I would be someone who has great attention to detail if I leave out a whole word? Instead of "will work well for me", it read "will well for me". Ugh! I just keep messing up! I may never get a job at this rate!

I also have another interview tomorrow morning at a library. If I can get through that without making a fool out of myself, it will be a miracle. Maybe I should take a different angle when describing what I have to offer- I could tell them that they will never have a dull day if they hire me.

This morning at 8:30am I got a call from the woman who sent the assessment test. She wanted to set up an interview! Yay, for me! I must have done well on that test. I told her that I could meet with her this afternoon.

SSB had a half-day today so we could go see the workforce development case worker about his dislocated status (his plant is closing in a month, and because more than 50 people will be losing their jobs, he qualifies for some benefits under Wisconsin law). I got ready early so that I could relax and figure out how I might answer various questions that my interviewer might ask.

Curled my hair- perfect! Did my makeup- perfect! Now to eat breakfast!

That's when I found a present from little Neo on the laundry room rug. He's been having some difficulty asking to go outside. He likes to poop by the cat litter and in our bathroom. It's something we had to work on with Zero too. When they go into shelters, they get accustomed to using their kennel as a bathroom and need to be retrained. So I had to stand with him outside for 20 minutes hoping that he would do something so that I could praise him. No luck.

SSB got home and got ready, and that's when I noticed the frizz taking over my hair. Ugh!! I tried a couple of products- still frizzy!! It's this stupid humidity! There is only one thing left to try. I have to wash my hair and dry it with my ionic curler-dryer. But I only have 30 minutes!

As I am washing my hair, I get deodorant on my hands (don't ask). The stuff is like tar! I try to wash it off, but it just sticks and is now smeared all over my hands! Now my hands are sticky! Yuck!

I am desperately trying to get my hair dry fast, yet frizz free, when SSB says that I should just stay behind and get ready for my interview while he goes to his thing. His appointment was at 1pm and mine was at 3pm. The locations were about a 40 minute drive apart. I was about to take him up on it, but I felt that I really needed to go. I gave up on my hair and went with him.

Everything at his thing went fine, except that it ran a little late - 2:05. We rushed back home to grab the directions to my interview. As I bolted out of the car to get the directions out of the house, I slipped a little on what I thought was mud. Yeah, you guys are smart. It wasn't mud. But I didn't figure that out until I tracked it all over the house! YUCK! It wasn't my dog's poo either! It was in the median where they can't go. Some jerk let his dog shit right in front of our house and didn't clean it up!

It's on my boot and I'm trying to clean it off so I don't reek like dog shit through the interview. SSB's yelling at me to get to the car cause we are running out of time. I grab a paper towel and book it out the door. He takes off like a mad man. I grab some hand sanitizer from the dash to clean my boot off. It takes the color off the leather! WTF?!

I start yelling. SSB swerves to turn around to go back home. I yell, "No! Go! There is no time. Just go!!" He whips the car around to get me to the interview. As I'm frantically wiping hand lotion on my boots to counteract the sanitizer, I see that SSB is covering his mouth so I won't see him laughing.

Oh, go ahead and laugh! It is funny. My hair is frizzy, my hands are sticky, I'm running late, my boots are nearly ruined, and there's a dog shit smell emanating from them. Seriously, what could be funnier? It's like this was scripted for comedy.

I don't care what is trying to keep me from this interview, I'M GOING TO THE DAMN INTERVIEW!!

I got there on time and I think things went well. At first. Towards the end I babbled a little too much. I'm not counting on getting this job, but at least I didn't give up. I did it, and now I am even more ready for my next interview. Now, I just need to get another desperate employer to call me.

Job Hunting

Tuesday, October 04, 2005 | 0 Comments

I have been out of a job for a month now. I'm getting pretty frustrated, to say the least. I have had friends look over my resume to make sure that it was OK, and they all said that it was fantastic. Granted, they could be trying to be nice to me, but they know I'd rather have them be honest and I believe that they would honor that. So what is the problem? More than one friend has suggested that I may be over-qualified for the jobs that I am applying for. On the other hand, some have suggested padding my resume. If I'm over qualified, well, I could take some things off my resume easily. But if I'm under-qualified, I could never put something on my resume that I didn't totally believe in- so padding is out of the question.

I finally got a call today. She asked specifics about my experience in bookkeeping and supervising. She seemed concerned that I have never used bookkeeping software for my business bookkeeping and that I may not know enough about other software that they use right now. But, I must have said something right since she sent a pre-employment test to take. I read that these tests cost on average about $30 to process, so that must mean that she's seriously considering me, right?

This is not the first time that I have taken one of these tests. I took one about 14 years ago for a grocery chain called Pick-N-Save. It was about 8-10 pages long. It started out OK, but by the third page, it got real weird. One question was: It is OK to hit someone if they make you really angry. Who would answer "agree" to that? Or better yet, who would answer "agree" to this one: I feel that I have been abducted by aliens. Seriously, are you kidding me? I started giggling. I knew at that moment that I did not want to work at Pick-N-Save and really considered just leaving with the test so that I could show it to my friends. It would have been a great party favor. But I was really interested to see if I would be acceptable to this store that was so concerned about hiring alien abductees with anger management issues.

I did not get the job. They never called me back. I still, to this day, wonder what they were testing for.

This last one I took was far more reasonable, but still a little weird. Lots of questions about drug use and dealing in the workplace and stealing. They started out asking if stealing and drug use in the work place was OK. Then they moved into wording the question in a way that suggested that you were stealing and using drugs in the work place. Once again, I couldn't help giggling. Exactly how many times and ways do I have to tell them that I don't do those things nor do I think that they are acceptable? I answered the questions honestly. I mean, what else are you going to do?

I was a little nervous about the test so I searched Google for answers. That's where I found this test. It's fun and free to find out how you might do on one of these.

I felt a lot better after taking it since I did very well.

You scored very high on this test, indicating that your susceptibility for dishonest behavior is minimal. You are someone who isn't swayed from acting honestly even in situations where many "normal" people would feel temptation to act deceitfully.

I'm expecting to hear from her in the next couple of days. Unless she too is looking for an alien abductee with anger management issues.

Enjoy the Detours

Monday, October 03, 2005 | 0 Comments

Once again I have abandoned my blog for a few days to enjoy a busy weekend. Since it was supposed to be the last warm weekend of the season, I decided to go camping. We packed up and headed off to the park that we camped at last time. We got there around noon, but alas, there were no more sites available. In October? So I got a list of other nearby campgrounds and started calling. Thank goodness for cellphones!

We ended up at a campground 40 minutes to the east. It is just outside a town where we own rental property. We have driven out there so many times to show the property and do repairs, but I had never really considered the area for it's beauty. Well, I was glad that we couldn't get a spot at the other grounds, because it was beautiful! We got a great secluded site right next to the river. But we would find out later that night that it was not as secluded as we would have prefered...

A little after 1am a large group of people about two sites away came back from the bar at the golf course that was part of the park. They were loud and obnoxious, as drunk people at that time of night tend to be. I figured that it would take about a half an hour for the excitement of leaving the bar to subside and for them to settle down. No, they were just getting started. After about half an hour, SSB walked over there to see what we were up against. There were well over a dozen very drunk people, so he just decided to sleep in the car.

I was pissed that they were being so rude to us as well as all the other campers. I walked past their site to check out my options. There were about six or seven cars parked. I wasn't pissed enough to try and reason with a gang of really drunk people. So I headed down to the registration cabin to see if there was an on-call number that I could use to get this taken care of. Yeah, there was. 911. Aw, come on! 911?! I gotta call 911 because some drunken assholes can't figure out that there are other people in the world; ones that don't care about the events of their night at the bar, how drunk they are, or whose butt is whose.

I decided I'd wait a little, see if they just wouldn't break it up after they recounted the stupidity of their evening. As I was passing their site on my way back I heard emanating from the group: "What's that you got? AH! You gonna do shots? Hell yeah! Let's do shots!!" I just turned right around and dialed 911. Shots?! They were going to go all night and get more loud and obnoxious!

The police wanted to know who I was and what campsite I was at. I told them that I'd just as well that those rowdy drunks not know who I was and where to find me. Fair enough, the police said they were sending someone out.

I went back to my tent and listened for the squad car. When it got there, I could here a drunk woman shouting: "Hey! It's Jeff! Hey Jeff, what's up?" Apparently, these people were familiar with the local police force. I could hear some low talking- and then that woman again: "OK, Jeff! Thanks Jeff!" Then I heard the car leave followed by three more cars. I'd love to be able to tell you that was that, but, the remaining people still stayed up until 5am talking and laughing. Oh, well. At least there were less of them and they were much quieter (but then again, short of setting off dynamite, they couldn't have gotten much louder!)

SSB actually got a pretty good sleep. I was up every hour because Neo wanted out to go look for him, and from occasional laughing fits from the drunk people.

The next morning I made eggs and toast. Then we went for a hike. The trees are just starting to change colors. I would love to come back when the trees are at peak and get some more pictures. Maybe we can even rent a boat and actually get out on the water!

I even brought back a special treat for all of you... a picture of SSB walking our dog down the wooded trail along the river. I'm glad that SSB enjoys the wilderness too. In fact, there's not too much that we don't enjoy doing together.

You should have had a really loud, rip-roaring breakfast. Gotten all schloshed on mimosa and bloody marys, cranked up some tunes and woken those drunks up early. That'll teach 'em.

Hope you guys have a great time and the drunks leave you alone for the rest of your trip.

Sometimes a walk in nature with your dog is the only thing that will take your mind off the way the Packers are playing. (I'm going to have to borrow a dog from someone).

It looks like I'm about to kick the dog in that picture...but I'm not, I swear! I'd never kick a dog, no matter how bad the Pack are playing!

And Cookie Christine: we did a little hooting and hollering after we were sure all the responsible campers were up, around 7:30 or 8:00....we let our dogs bark quite a bit too. I'm sure the other campers were enjoying the fact that we were giving the drunk bastards a taste of their own medicine!

I was just reading your new post--at school--in class, and almost drifted off to alittle snooze myself. It was so peaceful till the part about those damn drunks, I hate drunk people! Unless of course I am a drunkerd too, then I don't notice as much! Until the next morn and then I hate myself too, ahh I think I am beginning to babble! Better go, before I say too much! I should have gone with you..STUPID! STUPID!

Cookie Christine, I was good and noisy in the morning. I cooked breakfast on a cast iron skillet and clanged the spatula on it excessively. And I made sure that I yelled everything: "DID YOU WANT YOUR EGG SCRAMBLED OR OVER EASY?!!!"

ESC, heheh!...heheheh!

DrMax, The Packers are good boys. Yes they are! Yes they are! Now throw them some snacks.

SSB, the other picture really looked like you were going to kick him.

Astoria, are saying that my writing is relaxing, or boring? ;) You're not nearly as loud when you get drunk- even when you fight or cry. And yeah, you should have gone with us.

What is it with drunken people in the middle of the night? I was on a business trip last year, had to be up early, critical work, etc etc and I was kept awake all night in my hotel by loud, drunken people in the hallways.

They start wandering when the bars kick them out- or they get the munchies.

That picture of the lake is beautiful. With the changing leaves and all. Can I use it as my wallpaper?
