I wrangled SSBs computer away from him to post. Well, actually, he's not home so I finally get a chance today to post an update on the "Good Wife Guide".

My dad emailed me back:
"Hi there to you. That was to be humour.Going camping.Take Care.yourpaw."

Yeah, that's humor with an extra u. Maybe he's camping in Canada. And yeah, there's a bit of Hillbilly in our area, hence the "paw" (I actually find it quite endearing). The area was founded by Kentucks that were running from the law, or so the story goes.

Anyway, he claims it was all in fun, but I know him better than that. In his defense, however, he did tell me in our last 3 hour marathon phone conversation that he likes to do things to piss people off, even me. Well, Dad, that'll do it. Mission accomplished.

As for my mom, well my dad says that she is lucky to have him, but I say the two of them are lucky to have each other. They both act like children much of the time, but I understood at an early age that parents are just people. No matter what you expect out of them or what you think they should be, in the end they are just people with their own ideas, dreams, problems, and issues to work out. Both of them have been making huge strides in changing themselves lately, so we'll just see where it all leads. I must say that I have been very impressed so far.

I'm glad it was intended as humour ;) even if it held a grain of truth for your dad.

Good luck with your computer!!

The results of the four-year research project showed that olfactory stem cells can be turned into heart cells, brain cells, nerve cells – indeed, almost any kind of cell in the body – without the problems of rejection or tumors forming, a common side effect with embryonic stem cells

**This is the dirty little secret about stem-cell research.........Adult cells are more viable, and proven --> Embrionic cells are extremely volatile and have proven nothing, except to be frustrating.

But putting our money and hope in adult stem-cells would take the fun out of creating and killing fetuses

He wasn't joking. Like I said, I know him too well. He says it was meant as humor simply to spare himself my wrath, and possibly to try and make me feel foolish to boot- which he will not and I will not. He may be fooling all of you, but he can not fool me. And I'm still pissed.

My Dad Really Pisses Me Off!

Thursday, June 02, 2005 | 0 Comments

Before I send in my computer I thought I'd leave you with this little beauty of an irritation. My dad sent me this little gem- TWICE!! And I sent him an email back telling him what a jerk I thought he was for doing it. Then he told me how my reply hurt his feelings. Then I told him, well then, we're both in the same boat- so quit sending me this shit!

A while back he was complaining about how Mom does not fulfill her wifely duties. He went on to list what he felt were those duties and all the ways he felt that she violated them (uh, it was pretty much this "good wife guide"). I asked him if that's what he wanted for me. To be a "good little wife" and do whatever my husband told me to do. To cook all his meals and make sure that he's happy before all others, including myself, and even, God Forbid...My FATHER!!

He stammers a little and finally replies, "Well, no. Not you. It's not the same."

"How so?" I ask.

"Well, because you're my daughter."

"Don't you think that all these other women are somebody's daughter?" I ask.

He gets really flustered because he knows once again, I've got him. He hates arguing with me because I always win. And not just out-argue him, it's that he knows I'm right. And I'm not afraid to stand up for what I believe is right- no matter who I have to go up against. He once told me that was one thing that he most disliked and most admired about me. He said he liked that I could take care of myself and he never had to worry about me, but he didn't like it when it was used against him. You're not the only one, Dad.

Here's what he had to say about it in the email he sent me: By God Fred I like it.
Let's keep this one going.

Here's what I sent back to him: Dad, you already sent this too me awhile back and I already told you how offensive I thought it was. What kind of message are you trying to send me, anyway? This is a description a slave, not a wife. I'm disappointed that you don't have more respect for me as a woman. Your Loving Daughter, Sylvana

He calls me a man hater- I call him a woman hater. He says that's just the way it is and the way it's supposed to be. I told him that's what they said about slavery. I doubt he'd feel I got him on that one. He's not entirely against the idea.

Here are a few gems that I particularly find interesting in the article:

*Third bullet- "Be a little gay and interesting for him." Well isn't that every man's dream?

*Sixth bullet- "After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with emmense personal satisfaction."

*Seventh bullet- "They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part" They are people, not things to gawk at.

*Tenth bullet- "Let him talk first- remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours."

*Fourteenth bullet- "Don't complain if he's late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day."

But the last two are the most insidious! "Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgement or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him" AND FINALLY- "A good wife knows her place."

Well, I have just got myself sufficiently pissed off enough again that I can't really think of anything else to say that doesn't involve mostly profanatory rambling. But it should be no mystery that I think this is pure and utter BULLSHIT! And you'd better damn well be prepared to defend any support for such nonsense.

You might take some comfort in knowing it's probably a fake, although it does accurately reflect the attitude towards women 50 years ago. Be glad how much things have changed! And be wary of the people who think that time was idyllic and want to go back!

Blogger Sylvana said...

Scott, I'm not sure what you're saying about it being a fake. It's real in that some men obviously still think that this line of thinking is valid- and more importantly my Dad does and feels that I could learn something from it. Not cool; he's a jerk in that respect.

As for my own marriage, I NEVER would have married a man that felt this was the way it should be. It has to be a partnership, not servitude. We are the best of friends and we do things to please each other. That's the way it SHOULD be!

My parents marriage appeared to be made in heaven for I can scarcely remember a single cross word ever spoken between them. But it was based on a lop sided devotion of my Mother to my father, who reigned supreme. And to whom she spoilt rotten.

It belongs to a past era, never to be repeated, as my father was nearly killed in the 2nd world war, being away for a long time and discharged from the air force. In those circumstances only Sylvana maybe that behaviour can be acceptable. If you want to read that story and its hardships, its on my blog under "Charlie a Father",as he was my father. You may find it interesting, one that belongs to another era.

Best wishes

I remember finding a "How To Be A Proper Wife" manual on one of my friend's bookshelves when I was in high school, and had myself a good laugh, as I figured it was a joke. Then I was politely informed that it was given to my friend's mom by her dad on her wedding day. Yeesh.

Those things should be read with shock and amusement - not as a lifestyle guide. Sylvana, your mom must have to be a goddess of self-restraint in order to deal with crap like that. I guess that makes you a demi-godess, huh?

I have to send my computer in for repairs and I'm not sure if I will be able to get computer access long enough to post in the meantime. They said that it should only take a week with all the mailing, sitting around waiting for a tech and then actual repairs, of course.

I'm kind of nervous about sending in the computer since I have been witness and victim to repair people holding stuff hostage. My dad sent a snow blower in for repairs in October one year. The mechanic said it would cost $80 and would take two weeks. Two months later my dad called to find out what had happened to it, considering the snow was starting to accumulate. Well, said the mechanic, it's gonna cost $350 to get his blower back. My dad tells him at that price, he might as well keep the damn thing because he'd rather spend the money on a new blower! The guy had never even told him that he was going to do extra repairs.

The last time I sent my computer in for repairs they tore all the ID stickers off the bottom then tried to put them back on, but they were just curling off by the time I got it back. AND they completely forgot two of the repairs that I had requested they do. Urrr! And that was the company that I bought the computer from! I'm actually sending the computer to a new place. It was recommended by the computer company since it is closer and most likely will be cheaper (since it is no longer under warranty).

I did buy a hard drive to back up my entire computer before sending it in. Of course, that was an ordeal in and of itself! It took me almost as much time to get the damn thing installed as it did to get the high-speed internet hooked up. The tech I inevitably had to call even seemed a little confused a few times. I swear, nothing ever seems to go smoothly for me, so when it does, I am just in awe (like last week- it was amazing! Things were running smoothly for both me and SSB so we went out to eat to celebrate). However, it is backing up my files as I write this on SSBs computer.

Tomorrow I will be shipping it out to Michigan. So everyone, cross your fingers and wish me luck. I'm going to need it!

A Few New Things

Tuesday, May 31, 2005 | 0 Comments

Well, I changed the font on my blog and I am still trying to decide if I like it. Your opinion may sway my decision, so if you have a preference feel free to leave me a comment.

Also, I started a new blog to talk more in depth about my gardening experiences. I will still post some pictures of my gardens here, but the other blog will have a lot more. Plus I will post about things that I have learned over the years, so there may be some tips that would be useful to you in your garden- no matter how large or small that might be.

Night Out for Sy

Monday, May 30, 2005 | 0 Comments

Well, I had a pretty good night last night. My best friend, Astoria (her screen name not real name), here in town (SSB is my friend to trump all friends, though) was having a very stressful day and wanted me to go have a few drinks with her. Normally I stay away from the whole bar scene here because I am allergic to cigarette smoke, the whole soap opera of small town bars can get really annoying, and I have better things to spend my money on. But, she sounded desperate to get out and I hadn't been up there with her in a long time so I said sure.

We went to the bar where her baby's daddy works. He really needs to shit or get off the pot. They have been together five years. They live together and have a child together, but he just won't commit to her. He's not going out and seeing other women or anything, he just keeps telling her that he's not sure that he would be happy with her for the rest of his life. He is generally a pretty sweet guy, but when it comes to their relationship he's a total asstard. (that's for you Jake ;)

There was a jazz band playing at the bar and my "neighbor" (That's what he calls himself although he doesn't actually live near me. He used to and his ex-wife is my next-door neighbor, though.) was playing trumpet. I have never heard him play before. He's very good. He came over to talk to me a little bit between sets. He was telling me how the ceiling fan above where they were playing made it really hard to play because it was like talking into a fan- Waaouwaaouwaaouwaaou.

It was nice to just go out and hang with her. Normally when we go out there are so many other people and stories being played out, that I don't really get to enjoy her company. But last night, it was pretty quiet so we just got to sit and talk to each other without the drama. It was like having coffee, but with beers.

We left that bar when things got a little too smokey and went to a new bar. The bar we ended up in didn't have too many people in there and they were all guys. Some guy buys us a beer. And another guy seeing his opportunity lost offers to buy us Cheetos instead. Well, I can tell you that I had never been asked by a guy in a bar if he could buy me a bag of chips before. As we are eating the Cheetos and talking to the bartender there came shouting at the far end of the bar followed by a scuffle. The bartender went down there to settle things out and as he reached the end of the bar a stool came flying across the bar right behind Astoria into the liquor shelves smashing at least 5 bottles of liquor and knocking several others onto the floor. As three guys were pulling one of the brawlers out the front door, five other guys were holding back the other guy trying to push him to the back door. Another stool came flying toward the front of the bar, hitting and knocking over a table behind us. Astoria and I just sat there eating the Cheetos and drinking our beer. With one last shove they managed to get the guy out the back door. Seeing that, the guy at the front door (who was the guy who bought us the Cheetos incidentally) asked if he could come back in now. Astoria and I said, "NO! Now go home!" His head dropped, he turned around and shuffled off. We got to finished our beers in peace because we were the only ones that didn't get kicked out of the bar.

I had tons of fun and excitement, always got a great place to sit at the bar, and it wasn't even that smokey. I think I will have to go out on a Sunday night more often.
