You Made Me, Promises, Promises...

Tuesday, September 20, 2005 | 0 Comments

I think this news banner is so amazingly accurate! It saddens me to think what this knucklehead is doing to our country and all the things that he is neglecting to do for our country. He started his presidency with a surplus. A SURPLUS!! After 28 years of climbing deficit! And even 28 years ago the surplus was no where near as impressive. Clinton was able to create and build on a surplus the last three years of his presidency and this idiot- who has managed to run every business that he has ever been a part of right into the ground- did just that to it.

Moveon.Org created this television advertisement about Bush. I truly believe that after all the money that he has spent on the promise that he would in turn keep America safe, he didn't! Bush, I call BULLSHIT! You didn't keep America safe! And I don't think that you are capable of keeping America safe. All you do is smirk and laugh, like this is all just a big joke to you. To hell with you! You piss me off!

Republicans Make the Baby Jesus Cry

Sunday, September 18, 2005 | 0 Comments

The video link was broken, so here is the ad in picture format:
SSB found this and passed it over to me. This is a good example of why I don't understand how these religious people that say that they are Christian (ie- followers of Christ) can be in favor of the Republican platform and ideals. It just so goes against the ideas that Jesus was teaching people.

The implication here is that you, as Democrats and/or Liberals would support the opposing view. Am I to understand that you would actually support a Christian Theocracy in America by promoting and voting for Jesus?

Why would the Republicans or Bush oppose the teachings of Jesus? Why would this amusing ad be shared here when we know too well that Bush and Republicans are condemned as Christian fundamentalts, i.e. Jesus Freaks? The non-sequitor here is way too confusing.

The ideals Jesus espoused were for the salvation of souls, not as government policy. If this was a real ad it would be laughed off the air as only the most mentally inept would give it credence.

I would like to believe the readers here are more epted than is typical.

Blogger Sylvana said...

ORF, I'm going to have to check out Otto Man's blog.

Sierrabella, I cringed too.

Indigo Red, no, I would not support a Christian theocracy in America. Any one who truly believes in America and the ideals that were set forth when this country was founded wouldn't push for it either. That is very Anti-American.

This "campaign" ad is not literally about voting Jesus into office. It is was originally from MAD Magazine not a political organization. There are probably many messages that they were trying to convey.

1) It is showing how Bush would even smear Jesus to win an election if he had to run against him. (this is the funny part- it is MAD Mag)

2) Bush claims that he is doing God's work and that he is a devout Christian. But this commentary is pointing out that the the agendas that he is pushing are polar opposites to what Jesus was teaching. This shows him as either a hypocrite or a liar. Eh, which ever, it doesn't make him a very good person.

3) It shows that the very things the Republicans demonize are some of the very things that Jesus spent his life trying to teach his followers.

4) Bush and the huge evangelical Christian base that claim to have a right to running this country now because they were responsible for getting Bush back into office are being shown to be foolish or liars for backing a program that so obviously goes against Jesus. They can say that they are Christians and they can say that they follow the teachings of Christ- but they aren't cause they don't. They give Christians a bad name. They have taken the title Christian and used it for purposes that go against what Jesus believed.

September 20, 2005 10:34 AM

Blogger Indigo Red said...

Oh, MAD Magazine! Well, that's different. Never mind!

I agree with the general analysis. However, we must remember that Jesus was a private enterprise carpenter like Joe, his earthly Dad. And Jesus allied himself with entrepreneur fishermen. Jesus was a big believer in helping oneself before helping others, otherwise what good would one be?

He called a government tax collector, Levi (I think it was Levi) to follow Him. Levi carried the money bag. Later, He called Saul/Paul to the ministry away from his government bounty hunter job. Apparently, Jesus did not like to mix church and state, either.

Katrina is bringigng out the churches and Christians to help in a massive way. Hundreds of congregations are providing shelter to the displaced, all without government prodding. Americas churches may prove to be the real rebuilder of people's lives, not Washington, DC.

If Jesus ran for government office, I would not vote for Him because I don't think His policies should be government policies. The precepts are quite enough for guidance, but not for implimentation.

September 20, 2005 1:44 PM

Blogger Sylvana said...

So, Indigo, are you agreeing that Jesus is wrong for America?

September 20, 2005 1:59 PM

Blogger Indigo Red said...

Under the Constitution, Jesus can not be refused participation in governance as an office holder, as no religious test can be used. However, if He insisted upon turning America into a Christian Theocracy rather than the current Secular Kleptocracy, I would not vote for him. I did not support Pat Robertson for that very reason. Nor would I support a devout Muslim to office for the same reason.

I would not rule out anyone who uses religious belief as part of a personal decision making process. It essentially depends upon the degree to which religion plays a part in decisions. The Goldilocks Test should be used: too much, too little, just right. That is what we are really argueing - the degree of religiosity. Jesus is alight by me, but the degree of religiosty is too much. Well, duh! He is the Son of God and God incarnate after all.

So, I'm agreeing that Jesus is politically wrong for America. He has a fine cash-cow religion and should stick with that.

(Note: Indigo Red is an atheist.)

Indigo, I see Jesus as a philosopher, not as a god. I think that he was just a really smart guy with some really great ideas.

September 20, 2005 6:16 PM

Blogger Indigo Red said...

I agree. But, as you can see, I write about Him as though I were a believer. The language of religion is one of the constants in American history. I treat the Christian mythology with respect as it has formed the basis of my society and culture. The mythology says He is God. I accept the myth, but not the myth as fact.

Because there is no God, it doesn't matter to me one bit, whether folks pray in public, use God in the Pledge, etc. The ideas of Jesus are well worth respect even if Jesus, in fact, never existed. Of this, I am not all together certain of His existance, but, again it doesn't matter to me. The teachings are still more important than the man or the God.

Yoda, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad, Gandhi, etc. were all speaking of universally human truths that we can live by. The conflict is always about whos god is greatest, not which concepts actually work - my God can beat-up your God mentality.

The problem here is that there is supposed to a separation of church and state. Sneaking god references into our government is stepping over the line. Each religious reference that is allowed to remain brings us one step closer to a Christian State. That is not what our founders had in mind for this country. It is very unAmerican.

Another problem with these things being associated with our government is that people who do not subscribe to the Christian god will feel that they will not be treated equivelantly. All that god stuff snuck into our government only about 50 years ago. It was not included by the founders of our country.

March of the Penguins

Thursday, September 15, 2005 | 0 Comments

[Go here to read a faster version of the "encounter" at the theater]

Tonight was the last night for March of the Penguins at the theater in town, so we went. The theater was maybe a third full since it was the last showing. There were a lot of families there since it was a G movie and it had cute, fuzzy babies in it. How could you not want to bring your kid to that?

The movie started with the penguins rising from the sea to start their migration to their breeding ground further inland. I whispered to SSB that they looked like people in bags hobbling along. They really do look like people from a distance. Over the course of the next 5 minutes in which all we were hearing was wind and music, and all we were seeing was the penguins walking, scooting, and falling over, I whispered about popcorn, how cool the penguins looked when they went from scooting to standing- almost a spiritual look to them, and finally asked why he thought they traveled so far to breed.

All of a sudden I could here a loud Snap! Snap! Snap!

I ignored it. Then there was a "Hey! Hey!" with the Snap! Snap! Snap!

So I looked to find out what the hell was going on. This guy, five seats down, was leaning across the back of some seats over the head of his child sitting next to him, snapping his fingers loudly and yelling at me, "Hey! Hey! Are you planning on talking through the whole movie?"

What? What the hell is this guys problem?

Now, I understand movie protocol. I normally do not talk during a movie, but this theater was packed with kids that were also talking, crying, yelling out. There were adults that were actually talking to each other- not whispering- talking! I was whispering. Very quietly. SSB isn't deaf and he could barely hear me. And he was sitting next to me. Why this guy singled me out, I have no idea.

I was going to say, "I'm not sure yet. I guess we'll see."

But I was with SSB and I didn't want to start anything and make him tense. He gets enough tension at work. So I just glared at the guy and shook my head.

The penguins made it to the breeding ground and started to pair off. I heard that they did too much anthropomorphism in this part of the movie, but I didn't see it. It was sweet to be sure, but I didn't see any likening it to Romeo and Juliet or anything.

Right after the eggs were laid, a little girl about four or five years old came up to me and asked me if the seats next to me were taken. I told her, nope, go ahead and take them. She had a bag of popcorn stuffed under one arm and a big cup of soda under the other. She tried to elbow the seat down. Then she tried her knee. Finally, I pushed the seat down for her. She smiled real big at me. And that was the start of our friendship.

At first she would just look at me and smile or laugh when something funny would happen. Then she started to whisper things to me, asking me things- "What's that?" "Oh, that's the aurora australis- the southern lights." "Oh" she said shaking her head in approval.

And she would tell me things. "It's cold there." "The momma are going to go away soon" "Do you know what happens to them when they try to come out of the water? A big predator eats them."

And that's how I came to refer to her as Little Miss Movie Spoiler. She would explain every big scene before it happened. Obviously she had seen this movie before. She also became louder, I tried to get her to whisper, and she tried. For about three seconds. Then it was right back to regular talking voice. Hey, she tried! She's only five, tops!

No one ever came to sit next to her. It was as if someone had dropped her off at the movie with some money. "Here, get yourself some popcorn and a drink. Someone in there will take care of you once you get inside. Penguins take care of each other, we should too."

She was actually a ton of fun. Very sweet, funny, bold, smart little girl. I kept thinking that if I had a little girl, she would be just like her. I didn't mind the heads up on up coming scenes. It's not like I hadn't already seen a dozen documentaries that included, to some extent, the lives of penguins.

My favorite part was when the moms had to go back out to sea after having raised their chicks a bit stronger. LMMS starts a dialog, complete with appropriate emotion. "No. Don't go! Take me with you! I want to go with you!- No. You have to stay. You can't come.- But, wait! I want to come, too!- No. You have to stay here and take care of each other. You are on your own. We have to go."

Talk about laughing my ass off! This girl was a hoot!

At some point she had to get up to go to the bathroom. She announce to me, "I'll be right back."

SSB looked at me and we smiled at each other. This girl was just too cute. I leaned over and whispered, "I made a friend."

"I see that." He laughs.

When she came back she was going up and down the aisle. She couldn't see us obviously, so I waved. She beams and comes into our row. As I am pushing the seat down for her she leans forward smiling and said, "I couldn't find you! I thought I lost you!"

Aw! What a sweety.

After LMMS had joined me and started talking, I thought, WOW, what a coincidence that that Jackoff over there yelled at me earlier and now, even if I wanted to be quiet- which I had intended to, honest!- I couldn't be because how do you get a little girl to be quiet without hurting her feelings? Every time the whole audience would laugh really loud- an obviously funny part- I would look over at him. THAT GUY DIDN"T EVEN CRACK A SMILE!!! NOTHING!! He scowled through the whole movie! What a freak!

At the end of the movie I said goodbye to the little girl. SSB, JD and I were just walking down the aisle to the exit when I hear, "Hey!"

Ah!, I recognize that voice. I turn to see none other than Jackoff leaning over a bunch of movie goers, reaching for me, just totally pissed.

"Tell me what right you have to be so rude to talk through the whole movie?!"

I took a step toward him and leaned in to say, "Well, you know what? You're pretty rude yourself."

His jawdropped. He appeared obvioulsy shocked. I just turned and left. What an ass! That guy stewed through the whole movie. It was like he could only hear me. His ear grew four times the normal size just so he could pick up everything that I was saying. Good lord! There were two teenage girls two rows ahead of him that were doing some sort of light show with their cell phone through a good twenty minutes of the movie and not once did he say anything to them. There was another couple closer to him that talked throughout the movie- not whispered- talked! Why me? Why just me?

SSB and JD silently followed me. I thought, Oh great! I upset SSB. Stupid Jackoff!

Once we were outside and out of the din of the theater, I could hear SSB chuckling. He asked me what I said to the guy. I told him and said, "I hope that was the answer that guy was looking for, cause that was the only answer I was giving him!" We laughed.

Then I added,"I mean, it's not like there is some complex plot to follow!"

SSB replied, "Perhaps the plot was too much for him. 'What?! They're birds but they don't fly? They live in the frickin sea?! Slow down! You're blowing my mind!!'"

Well, what ever this guy's problem was 1) I feel sorry for his kids, 2) he probably should never, EVER go to a matinee, and 3) he has given SSB and I giggling fodder for at least a couple of days.

March of the Penguins final review: yes, I would recommend that you go see this. You could wait until it comes out on video, but the scenery works well for the big screen. The birds are beautiful and amazingly graceful at times. And there are tons of adorable, fuzzy baby penguins! Need I say more?

Maria, the egg in the freezing process was kind of cool. That little girl just made my night! Seriously, I wanted to take her home. But that, my children, is called kidnapping, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies. Even penguin societies, as we learned in the movie.

Randi, she left us right after the movie was finished. I waved and said goodbye to her. I'm sure she knew what she was doing. My best friend back home I met when she was four (I was eight)- she went where ever she wanted in town. She had total command of what was going on. You'd swear she was much older. This little girl reminded me of her at that age.

Rock Stars Do the Darndest Things

Wednesday, September 14, 2005 | 0 Comments

JD and I were watching "Rock Star: INXS" tonight. I love INXS. I totally had a crush on Michael Hutchence. Hated him with short hair, but he could still sing beyond just singing even with a bad hair cut. If you ever get a chance to see the movie that Michael was in, "Dogs in Space", see it. It was really good. But then again, the last time I saw it I was 17.

On the show a guy named Marty broke a guitar. JD asked why he did it. SSB explained that the destruction of an instrument during a performance was a symbolic gesture to show that the music had reached a level beyond the instrument's capability. It was supposed to show a nirvana of musical proportions. But, he explained, that it has lost that meaning since everyone does it now just for the hell of it- as this guy Marty had just done. He hadn't even started playing yet for crying out loud! JD was not impressed by that. He said that a person shouldn't waste good instruments like that. I told him that it was probably just a piece of crap guitar that never stayed tuned. In fact, I told him, I've got a guitar upstairs that could use a good thrashing.

Later another singer tore his t-shirt during his performance. JD asked why he did that. I said, cause he's stupid and he thinks it makes him sexy. JD shook his head. The guy finaled the performance by falling to his knees and ripping both the knees out of his gold lamé pants. (Oh yeah, I said it- GOLD LAMÉ! With a t-shirt. And he had Pat Benatar hair. I have no idea what this guy was going for).

Just as the guy is wrapping up his spiel for INXS about how he has grown over the last few weeks on the show (I can't vouch for the validity of the spiel, this was the first time I saw the show) JD says, "You know, that guy is going to really regret tearing that shirt."

Ah! I've taught him well! Now if he'd just put that into practice and quit wiping his hands on his pants and his face on his shirt...

I agree with the other comments on what a waste it is to smash instruments. It seems so cocky to think that your music is beyond an instrument's ability. That is truly a rare occurance, esp. in rock.

How much did you pay
for the chunk of his guitar,
the one he ruthlessly smashed
at the end of the show?
And how much will he pay
for a brand new guitar,
one which he'll ruthlessly smash
at the end of another show?
And how long will the workers
keep building him new ones?
As long as their soda cans
are red, white and blue ones!

This is the first Cake song I heard, and it's still my favorite.
